Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2021: According to the Indian calendar, Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month is known as Dev Uthani Ekadashi. This year Dev Uthani Ekadashi is on 14th November Sunday. Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Gyaras is also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi or Devouthan Ekadashi 2021. According to Hindu beliefs and rituals, Lord Vishnu is on the bed for four months, this period is called Chaturmas, and Lord Vishnu wakes up on the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

On this day, the marriage of Mata Tulsi (holy basil) is done with Shaligram. Tulsi is a divine plant in Hindu belief. Hindus consider it as an earthly manifestation of the goddess Tulsi; she is regarded as one of the avatars of Goddess Lakshmi and thus the wife of the god Vishnu. In the story, she married Jalandhara. After the end of the sleeping period of Lord Vishnu, they wake up from the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, and this day marriages and auspicious works begin in Hindu culture.

Points to keep in Mind while Tulsi Vivah on Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Gyaras

  • On this auspicious day of Devuthani Ekadashi, all the family members should call upon Lord Vishnu to wake up. After this, all the family members should bathe and wear clean clothes to attend Tulsi Vivah(marriage). 
  • The place where you kept the Tulsi plant should be Clean and place the plant in the middle of the worship area. This is very important for Dev Uthani Ekadashi. 
  • The place where you keep the Tulsi plant, make a Rangoli from Ocher around it. Also, apply ocher on the pot of Tulsi plant. 
  • According to Hindu culture, Sugarcane is used to decorate the mandap for Tulsi Vivah. 
  • Before starting the Tulsi Puja, offer Chunri, Bangle, ring and bindi to Mother Tulsi.
  • Place Shaligram on the right side of the Tulsi plant. 
  • Place Lord Shaligram in a pot along with the Tulsi plant and offer turmeric soaked in milk on them.
  • Use sesame for Lord Shaligram instead of Akshat. During the worship, offer seasonal fruits like water chestnut, Sugarcane, plum, amla, apple etc.
  • Chant Mangalashtak (मंगलाष्टक) at the time of the marriage. The male members of the house should take seven rounds of Tulsi Mata with Lord Shaligram in hand along with the outpost.
  • After the marriage worship of Tulsi Ji is over, distribute food and prasad to all family members and guests.
