After the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a framework to allow offline digital payments, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is now testing a system to facilitate such transactions. That is, UPI payment without internet can start soon.
We will soon be able to make offline payments
Offline digital payment services may start soon in the country. According to a report, it will be known as UPI Lite, where digital payments can be made through feature phones without the internet. The report quoted sources as saying that initially, offline digital payments of up to Rs 200 can be provided in rural areas through UPI Lite.
RBI governor had told the plan
It is worth noting that RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had told about this scheme only while giving information about the last monetary review policy. He had said that RBI is looking to launch a UPI based feature phone product. Along with this, the Reserve Bank of India had given its approval for offline digital payments up to Rs 200 only on January 5, 2022. Das had said that there has been a significant increase in digital transactions in India. In India, 122 crore transactions take place through UPI every month.
Two methods tested
According to the report, the two methods tested for offline payments include SIM overlay and over-the-air (OTA). SIM overlay enhances the functionality of the SIM card to make it capable of payments and other services without internet. OTA is a function of the phone itself that provides a solution to directly access the firmware of the device. Apart from this, options like Near-Field Communication (NFC) are also tested. After the launch of UPI Lite, digital payments can be made even from feature phones without the internet.
Have to do this work to get paid
Software or SIM updates will have to be done in the feature phone depending on the payment option. We can do this work easily from the telecom company’s store. For offline digital payments, the user has to create a Virtual Payment Address (VPA). This is commonly called UPI ID. The payee should also have this UPI ID. This UPI ID will be of four or six digits depending on the bank.
