In the Hindu calendar, Chaitra Navratri begins on the first day of the bright half of the Chaitra month. Setting up the Kalash on the first day is very important. People believe that on this day, Goddess Durga comes down from heaven and stays for 9 days to bless her followers. So, on the first day, we worship Goddess Durga by setting up the Kalash and following rituals. During Navratri, people fast for 9 days.

On the first day of Navratri, in the morning, clean your house nicely. Draw Swastikas on both sides of your front door. Hang a string of fresh mango or Ashoka leaves on the door for good luck and happiness. After you take a bath, put up a picture or a statue of Goddess Durga on a wooden stand or a seat. Draw a Swastika symbol nearby. Put the idol of Lord Ganesha on the left side of Goddess Durga. Then, in front of Goddess Durga, plant barley seeds in a clay pot. Barley is thought to bring prosperity and happiness.

If you don’t know any special words to pray to the Mother Goddess, you can use a special prayer called the Navarna mantra. It goes like this: ‘Om Ain Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche.’ While you say this prayer, offer makeup items and a coconut covered with a cloth to the Goddess.

Put a lamp with clarified butter in it, facing southeast in your prayer area. Say, ‘Om Deepo Jyoti: Parabrahma Deepo Jyotir Janardanah’ as you light it. Then recite another prayer: ‘Deepo Haratu Mein Papam Pooja Deep Namostute,’ and wave the lamp in front of the Goddess as a sign of respect.

Keep a lamp burning with pure clarified butter throughout your worship of Mother Goddess.
