Google Doodle honors India's Gama Pehlwan, the undefeated wrestling champion

Today’s Doodle is made by visitor artist Vrinda Zaveri, which celebrates Gama Pehlwan’s achievements in the ring but also the influence and representation he brought to Indian culture.

The real name of Gama Pehlwan was Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt (22 May 1878 – 23 May 1960). He was born in Jabbowal village of Punjab's Amritsar district.

Gama Pehlwan was widely regarded as one of the best wrestlers of all time. Gama stayed undefeated throughout his international contests and gained the name “The Great Gama.”

Gama achieved numerous championships during his career, notably the Indian versions of the World Heavyweight Championship (1910) and the World Wrestling Championship (1927).

Gama Pehlwan has been a household name in India for decades, usually used while noting a person's strength. When Gama Pehlwan was 10, his workout routine comprised 500 lunges and 500 pushups at only 10 years old.
