Australian Open 2023: Nadal said needed this win after he began title defense with a win over Draper

Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Britain's Jack Draper 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the Australian Open 2023 on Monday,

Defending champion Rafael Nadal documented his 77th career win in Melbourne as he crushed Britain's Jack Draper in four sets to seal his berth in the second round of the Australian Open 2023.

The Spaniard, who has had a difficult last few months owing to injury, recorded a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 over the 21-year-old tennis sensation in front of a crowded Rod Laver Arena.

After this victory, Nadal stated the importance of starting the tournament positively, especially given his recent struggles.

"It's a great feeling to be back. This is one of the most emotional tournaments of my tennis career. I am super happy to be here at the Rod Laver arena in Australia one more time."

Nadal is attempting to win his third Australian Open title as he competes for a record-extending 23rd Grand Slam singles crown.

Draper was trying to get to a Grand Slam's second round for the third time. His best victory was upset over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round of the 2022 US Open.
